A small fishing town in Massachusetts is making headlines worthy of a double take.
17 high school girls here, are pregnant and school officials are trying to figure out why.
Over the past few months many of the girls involved have showed up repeatedly at health clinics--- asking for pregnancy tests.
But their reactions to the test results were puzzling: high-fives if they were expecting, long faces if they weren't.
It's been reported that some of the girls may have made a pact to have babies and raise them together.
"I would imagine that if they were pregnant together that they would be supporting one another. As I say, I have no evidence that there was a pact......"
The story exploded after the principal of Gloucester High School, was quoted by Time magazine saying the girls confessed to making such a pregnancy pact.
Some say recent movies like the film "JUNO" have glamorized teen pregnancy.
"They saw that it was OK to have sex such an early age and have children actually."
Alycia Mazzeo agreed to speak with the A-P.
She has a 7-month-old baby....Only 16 years-old herself---Mazzeo is always concerned that the pregnant teens aren't in tune with reality.
"I feel sad because I don't think that they completely understand the depth of it, and I don't think they see the other side when the baby is crying from colic at 3 am, but I guess they will soon."
City and school officials here in Gloucester are struggling to explain the pregnancies --but many say the school needs to teach the value of using contraceptives.
