「1時間半」を英語で言うと？

以下の3つの言い方があります。


『an (one) は1』、『a halfは1/2（0.5）』を意味するので、an (one) hour and a halfは、an (one) hour「1時間」＋a half「0.5時間」なのに対して、one and a half hoursは、one and a half「1＋0.5＝1.5」＋ hours「時間」となり、1.5は１より大きいのでhourは複数形になります。

★単数扱いと複数扱い
意味は同じでも「an (one) hour and a half」は単数扱い、「one and a half hours」は複数扱いとなるので注意！
・An hour and a half is allowed for the exam.
・One and a half hours are allowed for the exam.

※英語圏での使用頻度が圧倒的に多いのは「an hour and a half」（参考：ネイティブが使う英語・避ける英語）というデータがでていますが、どれを使っても間違いではないので好みのものを使えばよさそうです。

「2時間半」や「3時間半」を英語で言うと？

「1時間半」には3つの言い方がありましたが、2時間半、3時間半．．．8時間半などになると「～ and a half hours」となります。

★2時間半
・two hours and a half　←通じるがネイティブは使わない
・two and a half hours　←これが一般的な言い方

★3時間半、4時間半、、、
・3時間半　three and a half hours
・4時間半　four and a half hours
・5時間半　five and a half hours
以下同じ

「1時間半」「2時間半」などの自然な英語での言い方

上記より、使用頻度が高い自然な言い方は以下のとおりです。いろいろ書きましたが、とりあえずこれを覚えておけばOKです。

★1時間半
・an hour and a half

★2時間半（3時間半、4時間半など．．．）
・（数字） and a half hours
・two and a half hours (2時間半)
・three and a half hours (3時間半)
・four and a half hours (4時間半)
これ以上の数になっても同じ

（例文）
I have been waiting for an hour and a half.
私は１時間半も待っている。

Three and a half hours have passed since he left.
彼が出発して３時間半が経過した。

The scheduled working hours for our company are seven and a half hours.
当社の所定内労働時間数は7時間半である。

では、「1年半」や「2年半」を英語で言うと？

基本的には「1時間半」や「2時間半」と同じです。1年半の場合、「1年＋0.5年」か「1.5＋年」かどちらかの方法で表現すればよいわけですが、「1年＋0.5年（a year and a half）」の言い方が一般的です。一方、2年半、3年半．．．などになると「2.5＋年（two and a half years）」、「3.5＋年（three and a half years）」．．．の言い方が一般的です。

★１年半
・a year and a half　←これが最もよく使われる
・one year and a half　←これはほとんど使われない
・one and a half years　←これでもOK

「1時間半」と同様に、a (one) year and a halfは単数扱い、one and a half yearsは複数扱いとなる。
・A year and a half has passed.
・One and a half years have passed.

★2年半（3年半、4年半など．．．も同じ）
・two years and a half　←あまり使われないが、これでもOK
・two and a half years　←これが最もよく使われる
