Health Ministry steps up surveillance for flu
Japanese health authorities will step up domestic surveillance for flu infections. The decision was made in view of the latest WHO report on cases of swine flu in Mexico and the United States.
The World Health Organization announced on Saturday that the current situation constitutes "a public health emergency of international concern."
On Sunday, a Japanese Health Ministry official told reporters that the ministry would tighten quarantine steps to prevent the potential spread of swine flu.
Yoshio Namba, in charge of measures against new types of influenza, said the health of people returning from Mexico would be monitored for a certain period by obtaining their consent at airport quarantine offices.
The official said quarantine offices would provide local health authorities with the contact address of returnees from Mexico and check their health on a regular basis for about 10 days after their arrival in Japan.
The ministry also plans to strengthen domestic tracking of serious cases of pneumonia and influenza.
